Week 5 Reminders

Tālofa lava!  This week is Samoa Language week.

Samoa Language Week celebrates the identity, language, and culture of students from Samoa and students whose families are from Samoa.  Throughout the week there will be activities children can participate in during class time as well as lunch breaks.

Why not try learning some words or phrases to use at home this week…

  • Tālofa lava: Hello (formal)

  • Mālō le soifua: Hello/Good health

  • ‘O ā mai 'oe? How are you? (to one person only)

  • Manuia fa‘afetai: Good, thank you

  • Manuia le aso: Have a great day

  • Tōfā soifua: Goodbye (formal)

Our Learning

This week sees our morning play change to a different curriculum area.  Over the next two weeks, children will have the opportunity to develop their skills as scientists.  Teachers will be supporting the children to use the science capabilities such as observing, inferring, and gathering data while conducting simple science experiments.

We continue to be impressed with the perseverance of all our children in their reading and writing.  It is always a pleasure to see children trying their best and working hard to achieve their own personal learning goals.

This term, in maths, we continue to develop our knowledge of numbers.  We will also be looking at measurement which includes volume, length as well as time (days of the week, months of the year).  Measurement is a wonderful learning area where children are able to use their knowledge of numbers to solve real-life problems.

Ko Hāta Maria Icon

We are incredibly lucky to have the icon Ko Hāta Maria - Holy Mary in our parish.  All children in Kākano will visit and learn about this beautiful icon during the week.

Pentecost Mass

This Friday, at 9am, Kākano children will be running our whole school Mass.  All families are welcome to join us in the church.  It will great to have our community celebrate Mass with us again.  We also have two of our Kākano teachers, Mrs Thomson and Mrs Mareroa being invited into the Catholic church.

Pentecost is a special time in our church and is known as the Birthday of the Church.  Our learning in RE this week will be about Pentecost and the gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit.

Pink Shirt Day / Shop fun

Reminder we have Pink Shirt Day tomorrow.

If your child does not wish to wear pink, they need to come to school in their uniform.

This week we have been using dramatic play and learning all about how we can create our own shop.  The children have enjoyed pricing items for their shop, creating Kākano money and of course selling!  It is great to see how imaginative the children are and how they work together.

Week 3 Notices

Thanks so much to all our Parents, Caregivers, and students who came to our 3-way Conferences this week. It was great to catch up with you all and discuss your child's progress and next steps.

School Photos

On Monday morning we have our school photos. Our classes are up first so there will be little chance of getting dirty. We will make sure all our tamariki look just right for the photos. Boys are to have their woollen jerseys on and girls are to wear their skivvy and tunic with long hair tied back. Please ensure your child’s jerseys are named too, in case they take them off!

Structured Literacy Information Session

Are you curious about the new approach to spelling and reading taking place at school? You may have learnt a little about this at your parent conference this week.

Come along and learn about the structured literacy approach, what this means for your child and how you can support their learning at home.

Our consultant, Marion Kirby from Learning Matters will give you a brief overview of how the brain learns to read - you may learn a thing or two yourself!

See you upstairs in the Staffroom at 3 pm this  Wednesday the 18th of May. Tea, Coffee and snacks provided.

Term 2, Week 1

Welcome back! We hope you have had a wonderful break and got plenty of rest and relaxation along the way. We are looking forward to seeing your tamariki tomorrow in their winter uniforms and hearing all about their holidays.

Welcome to our new families joining St. Mary’s. We are looking forward to getting to know your tamariki and developing relationships with them and yourselves. There are lots of new friends to make that will be starting school on the same day and I’m sure there are children they may already know in our kakano space.

Library

The library is one of the many rooms in the school that was recarpeted during the holidays. The contractors were on a tight time schedule to get the carpeting done. As a result, the library will be closed until it is able to be reset.  Library days are likely to be affected - we will keep you updated throughout the week.

Holiday Reading Logs

Bring these back to school this week to help your class go in the draw to win pizza and chips for lunch. The classes with the most reading logs returned are eligible to go in the draw. Remember - if mum/dad/aunty/grandpa etc have read you a book during the holidays, this counts as one of your entries. If you have lost your reading log, write down on a piece of paper what you have read or what has been read to you. PLEASE make sure that your NAME and CLASS are written on your reading log.

Reminders / Changes

  • School starts at 8.45 am for all students. There will not be staff at the gates in the morning and students will be permitted to come into school as they arrive. We do ask that you drop your child off at a reasonable time.

  • School finishes at 3.00 pm for all students except bus students who will leave their classrooms at 2.50 pm.

  • Students are to sanitise their hands as they come through the school gates
